The Best and Easiest Way to Create Your Own Podcast
By: TL Kleban
Are you the type of person with a lot of opinions on almost everything and anything? If you answered yes to that, then why don’t you start your own personal blog to let the world see your thoughts? Better yet, start a podcast and tell the world what you think. You’ve got something to say and you’ve got the voice to do it.
In case you aren’t familiar with what a podcast is let me give a brief explanation. They are pretty much audio broadcasts made professionally or by anyone with the right software that are uploaded and available on the Internet. What makes them different from traditional talk radio shows full of opinions is that they follow set schedules, while a podcast can be downloaded and listened to anytime and anywhere in iTunes or on your iPod.
Here is how you can get involved in the new and exciting world of podcasting from your own home. By following these steps, you’ll not only increase traffic to your blog but you’ll also set it apart from the blogosphere.
- Find quality recording software – You can’t record a podcast without the proper recording software. The software should also give you the ability to edit, as well. GarageBand makes a great piece of software for those Mac Users out there and I recommend Audacity for PC people. There are also a bunch of great all-purpose podcast software solutions available to record your podcast.
- Find a good microphone – If you’re a beginner podcaster and are not sure where to start out with buying a microphone, try out the Shure Beta. It’s a great starter mic that combines ease of use alot with a great price of around $160 which isn’t too shabby considering the amount of features it comes with. You’re going to need a USB interface so that you can hook it up to your computer into your computer.
- Plan out the podcast – Just like it is with any other website, content rules. If you’re podcast is full of unorganized and uninteresting material, no one will want to listen to the first time let alone return for any other new content. Pay attention and listen to other podcasters and see what type of content they provide and how they provide it. It would be a good idea to sit down beforehand and plan out who your audience will be.
- Start recording – You’re a beginner at this so it’s ok to make mistakes. Just be sure to learn from those mistakes. Experiment with a few various methods to help the podcast’s sound quality. Read what other audio experts have to say on the subject to improve your own techniques.
- Time to edit - Now that have finished recording your podcast, it is time to clean up and edit the audio tracks. I recommend using software such as Audacity, GarageBand, or Propaganda. They are easy to use and work very well for your project goals. Check out a few forums dealing with podcasting to find answers to any questions you may have.
- Upload the podcast – It is not very difficult to find podcast hosting. The only thing you need to do is find an available URL that works for your website’s theme, find an able provider and then create an RSS feed for the podcast. Once you have your website all set up, the only thing left for you to do is upload the podcast.
- Have someone review the podcast – Now that you are a proud member of the podcaster family, you should build a blog to go along with it. This way all of your listeners can comment on what their likes and dislikes were of the podcast.
